Get to know the current trend in South Korean men through Big Bang



Note: This is an article from Kan Fun, a newly-launched newspaper published weekly in Japan about Korean entertainment. The person who wrote this article is Moon Eun Sil, a writer for Mnet M!Countdown. This isn't exactly news but more of a feature article meant to entertain.

For 2011, there are 3 types of men who are currently in the trend in South Korea. Let's get to know them through the members of BIGBANG, who have been topping music charts since their comeback.

Type #1 : "Kka-do-nam"
This term comes from "kkachildan dosi namja" which means "rough urban men". Hyun Bin, who acted as a rich man in the drama, Secret Garden, can be described as such. In the music scene, BIGBANG's G-Dragon clearly personifies this type.

"Oppa, look at me just once!" G-Dragon rarely responds to this kind of request and usually doesn't make eye contact. This is especially true when he's not in a good condition. But still, no one can get mad at his character because when fans say, "Oppa is the coolest!", he gets shy, can't close his mouth and just smiles. Everyone knows he has a pure heart.

If you want to attract G-Dragon's "kka-do-nam" style, you have to have a rough attitude 9 times more than him. Maybe after that, you can make him smile even just once.



Type #2: "Cha-do-nam"

Short for "chagaun dosi namja" or "cold/cool urban men". Kim Hyun Joong, who starred in Playful Kiss, exemplifies this type the best. BIGBANG's T.O.P can also be classified under this type because he has shown an image of someone who's reserved and likes being alone. With his somber look, he clearly epitomizes this type of man.

However, T.O.P can also do gags in front of the camera. "I got atopy so I can change my name now from T.O.P to Atopy" Generally, T.O.P looks cool but he can also be funny especially to people that he can open himself up to. This is the fascination of a "cha-do-nam".

If you attract a "cha-do-nam" style like T.O.P, you should always be on the watch for his sudden jokes.



Type #3 "Tta-do-nam"

This term is short for "ttatteushan dosi namja" or "warm urban men". Won Bin, who treats a child actress kindly in the movie, Ahjussi, is under this type. Among the members of BIGBANG, it can be said that Seungri falls under this category. He is the opposite of his two older brothers who were described earlier as "rough" and "cold" men.

Seungri has a rap version of "Thank you, staff!" which he uses to cheer up people he works with when they're having a difficult time. He's the friendly cute boy type who can create a cheerful atmosphere in the studio with his antics. Because of this, he has a lot fans especially older women.

If you want to attract a guy with a "tta-do-nam" style, you should always be with him and laugh together.



Having all these 3 types in their group, BIGBANG is surely part of this trend right now. When they came back in the music scene, they swept various music charts. We look forward to seeing what other trends they will show us in the future.

Big Bang @ Fan Meeting in Seoul



Big Bang held a special ‘handshake event’ for 1,000 of their fans as one last gift before they officially conclude two months of Korean promotions and head off to Japan for their upcoming tour.

As it is their last time seeing their Korean fans before “Inkigayo” tonight, the members were all smiles as they personally shook hands and high-fived each of their fans. One child even received a kiss on the cheek from leader G-Dragon, earning cries of jealousy from the rest of the crowd.

In an interview with Star News after the event, the members stated, “This was the first time we held an event to shake hands with our fans like this. It makes us feel good that our fans had a lot of fun.”

They continued, “We were worried a bit since we hadn’t promoted in such a long time, but we just focused on getting up stage and enjoying it. We’d like to thank our fans for supporting our comeback for the first time in two years.”

The boys will be holding their goodbye stage on SBS’s “Inkigayo” with a special intro track and “Love Song.” Starting May 10th, they’ll be kicking off their “Love & Hope” tour in Osaka, followed by Nagoya and Chiba.

Korean group BIG BANG appeared on of Fuji Television’s “Tokudane!” to promote their new song, “TONIGHT“!

After making a dorky entrance, the boys of BIG BANG gives a slick performance of the Japanese version of “TONIGHT”. The track will be released on their upcoming Japanese album “BIGBANG 2“, which is set for a release on May 11th. A preview for “Ms. Liar” can also be heard towards the end of the video.

388 celebrities and entertainment representatives recently voted on Korea’s best singers conducted by Korean news portal Enews24.

After everything was tallied, 1st place went to Cho Yong Pil who obtained 58 votes (15.2%). As someone in his 60’s, his performances are just as passionate as when he was in his prime. He continues to greet his fans through a variety of methods, from movies to moving stages. Recently, he has appeared on a broadcasts giving his fans a glimpse of hope of a possible comeback.

2nd place went to YG Entertainment’s Big Bang with 29 votes (7.4%). Though their is a 30 vote gap between 1st and 2nd place, it seems that Big Bang has been chosen as the top artist of the current music industry. They have been the ‘hot icon’ of the music industry for the past several years. As soon as they release new music, they sweep music charts across the board and their fashion is also a continuing topic of conversation.

3rd place went to Lee Seung Chul. Not only is he a representative Korean artist, he is also a judge on ‘Superstar K‘. He has fans of all ages and genders. From broadcasts to internet concerts, he is an hardworking representative artist.

4th place surprisingly went to Kim Bum Soo with 22 votes (5.6%). He is currently confirming his status as an outstanding vocalist by his appearance on MBC’s “I Am a Singer“.

5th place went to the current issue-maker Seo Taiji with 21 votes (5.4%); one vote shy of Kim Bum Soo. Seo Taiji has kept much of his personal life private and hasn’t had much regular activities, yet he managed to get a decent amount of votes. This survey was taken prior to the revealing of his former relationship with actress Lee Ji Ah. The results of this survey may have differed if completed after the incident.

6th and 7th place were claimed by SM Entertainment artists. SNSD had 17 votes (4.3%) while TVXQ had 12 votes (3.0%). There was a tie for 8th place as it went to both Kim Gun Mo and Rain, each with 11 votes (2.8%) respectively. 9th place went to Lee Moon Sae, Yoon Do Hyun, Lee So Ra, and 4minute, each with 8 votes (2%).

The rest of the results include Baek Ji Young, Shin Seung Hoon, Na Ul, and Insooni each obtained 7th votes. Park Jung Hyun (Lena Park), Seo In Young, Lee Eun Mi, and Lee Hyori each had 6 votes. Lastly, Park Hyo Shin, Boohwal, Brown Eyed Soul, and Lim Jae Bum each took in 4 votes.

Kpop music rides Youtube, internet tools to Europe



SEOUL, May 4 (Yonhap) -- The Louvre Museum in Paris isn't normally associated with South Korean pop culture. But last weekend, hundreds of young French people rallied in front of the historic museum, calling for an extra Korean pop music concert [SM Town Concert].

After tickets for a June 10 show sold out in just 15 minutes, the flash mob picketed and danced to the Korean tunes in a mostly harmless gathering, while demanding another concert be scheduled. They wanted their chance to see their favorite South Korean stars without having to pay an exorbitant amount of money for scalped tickets.

Experts and record label executives here say such a rally won't likely be a one-time event, as Korean pop music, branded "K-pop," continues to ride the wave of video-sharing Web sites, social networking services (SNS) and other Internet tools to international prominence.

The popularity of Korean pop culture, known as "Hallyu," or literally the "Korean Wave," had previously been confined to Asia. South Korean artists would make charts in Japan and would draw big crowds at occasional shows in China or Taiwan, but selling out concerts in Paris is a relatively recent development.

Min Ji-eun, a France-based stringer for the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange, said there have been other, similar rallies across France since late last month to call for more Korean concerts.

"During rallies on May 1, French fans were joined by those from Madrid and Barcelona," Min said. "This Saturday, in Lyon and Marseilles, people from Munich are planning to have their rally."

YouTube, the world's largest video-sharing site, has played a major role in the growing popularity of K-pop, officials here say.

According to YG Entertainment, one of South Korea's major talent agencies, the YouTube channel for its boy band named Big Bang has attracted 5.7 million visits from Europe from December last year to the start of this month.

The quintet, which debuted in 2006, recently broke its two-year hiatus with a chart-topping EP. Big Bang ranked first in an online poll of favorite South Korean boy bands on the Web site kpopfrance.com, a K-pop site for French fans. Another YG acts, 2NE1, topped the list for favorite girl groups.

A male duo, TVXQ, reached No. 4 on the United World Chart operated by a German site, Media Traffic, with its album "Keep Your Head Down" in January this year.

S.M. Entertainment, a rival agency of YG that has produced popular groups such as Girls' Generation and Super Junior, said its YouTube channel has drawn 80 million hits since June 2009.

"Fans from all over Europe -- France, Britain and Italy -- visit our channel and write comments," an official from S.M. said. "International fans stay up to date on our artists through this channel. Last year, when members of Super Junior went to Italy for personal vacations, they were greeted by some 300 fans at the airport. That showed us how popular Korean musicians have become (in Europe)."

In February, a French cable channel called Canal + did a feature on a new South Korean boy band, Teen Top, and a Belgium state broadcaster introduced K-pop groups SHINee and Girls' Generation to the local audience.

Yang Hyun-suk, head of YG Entertainment, said his company has been trying to capitalize on Internet tools to market its acts across the world.

"In this day and age, people find the content they want on the Internet," Yang said. "And for years, we at YG have been marketing our artists through YouTube. In addition to music videos, we also upload clips from TV programs after going over copyright issues. That's brought us fans from the U.S., Europe and South Africa."

Yang said will.i.am, a member of the Black Eyed Peas currently visiting Seoul for a show, told him that he was surprised to meet so many fans of 2NE1, an all-girl quartet, in Brazil, where he'd recently performed.

Kim Young-min, head of S.M., points to the high quality of Korean pop music.

"We've been producing global contents using our wide networks," Kim said. "A top European composer would write a song, an American choreographer would build dance moves and a Korean producer would put together the whole package. And a Korean artist would sing in different languages, too. These contents are competitive in the global market because they've been produced through global networks."

Yang said the French fans' rally at the Louvre was "great news" for Korean pop culture as a whole.

"That contents of Korean pop culture are so loved in Europe is encouraging in terms of expanding our horizons," Yang said. "The power of cultural contents leads to other added values, such as improved national image. The world Hallyu isn't enough to aptly describe this phenomenon."

Big Bang kicks off their Japan tour



Yesterday and earlier today, Big Bang kicked off their Japan tour titled “BIGBANG presents ‘Love & Hope Tour 2011′” with their first two showy concerts at the Osaka Jo Hall in Osaka.



Pillars of fire, an explosion and then the curtains rose for a thrilling and fun ride featuring a performance total of 24 songs. V.I (Seungri) greeted their Japanese fans, “How are you!? Various terrible things happened since we came here from Korea, but we promised those concerts to you and that’s why we are still here!” The atmosphere among the 9,000 fans immediately reached its climax thanks to those words.



The five members of Big Bang see the tour as a way to show their support for the reconstruction after the tragic Tohoku earthquake. Unfortunately a lot of their Korean fans were too worried about their idols and even started a petition with more than 7,500 signatures, asking their agency to not let them go to Japan at all. However, the group decided that it’s more important to keep their promise they made to their Japanese fans back in February of 2010, when they announced this Japan tour.



On May 2nd, the group arrived in Japan and soon after that member G-Dragon uploaded a clip onto the Internet, assuring everyone that it is safe in Japan. Before today’s concert they also had a few minutes to talk with the press and G-Dragon commented, “With our presence here we want to let everyone know that it’s safe. I’d like the Korean people to join us and walk the road of reconstruction together with the Japanese.” He continued, “We also received fan-letters from people living in areas struck by the earthquake and tsunamis. If we get the time and chance, we’d like to go and visit those places.”



Big Bang’s Japan tour will continue through three cities, adding up to eight concerts in total and at least 102,000 happy Japanese fans.

OMG!!! AKB/SDN48 attented BIGBANG's Concert !!

On May 13th, AKB48’s Maeda Atsuko and Shinoda Mariko along with SDN48 member Sato Yukari made their way to Chiba’s Makuhari Messe for Big Bang’s “Love & Hope Tour 2011” concert.

Maeda blogged the most about it, showing off her VIP (Big Bang’s fanclub) gear. Being in the top girl group in Japan can be tiresome and even these girls need some down time for some relaxation and fun. Maeda posted, “Mariko and I were particularly fired up!! It was the best way to relax. I’m very thankful to BIGBANG.”

After the concert was over, Shinoda and Sato went to fellow AKB48 member Kojima Haruna’s house to eat curry, but Maeda had to return back to work.

YG's Statement on G.D's leg injury


It has been revealed that although Big Bang’s G-Dragon has a cast on his leg, it’s not a major injury.

On May 16th, a YG Entertainment representative said,
“G-Dragon slightly sprained his leg during the concert. It is not a big injury. He is only wearing the half-cast during performances in case the injury might worsen while moving around. It is okay now. There is no need to worry.“

G-Dragon’s injury was made known by a tweet from MBC’s “Infinity Challenge” producer Kim Tae Ho. He tweeted about Big Bang’s Japanese concert, saying, “GD had a light cast on his right foot.”

While that tweet was made in response to a Big Bang fan, his response quickly informed netizens of G-Dragon’s injury.

Big Bang is currently on their “Love & Hope Tour” in Japan, hitting up Osaka, Nagoya, and Chiba.

Oppa Fighting!! Περαστικααααα!!

Big Bang create a movement of Japanese Celebrities with their tour!



Popular group Big Bang are singers well known for creating a movement of Japanese celebrities. During Big Bang’s first concert in Japan in 2008, baseball stars such as Akira Otsuka, Omine Yuta and Yuki Karakawa, from the Chiba Lotte Marines, attended the concert as well as vocalist Keita Tachibana from ‘W-inds‘. Many stars proved their attendance and exciment through the internet.

This time, Big Bang began their Japanese tour in Osaka on May 10th and once again created a movement attracting many famous stars.

Members from popular groups like AKB48 and Smileage as well as famous actors, models, singers, etc. posted photos one after another on their blogs and Twitter, confirming their attendance.

AKB48 members Atsuko Maeda and Mariko Shinoda, as well as SDN48′s Yukari Sato posted photos of themselves together at Big Bang’s concert on the 14th as well as photos of their purchased bracelets and CDs.

Smileage member Fukuda Kanon also attended the concert and wrote an entry in her blog saying, “I want to go see them again! We want to be able to make a stage like theirs so we made sure to study what they did closely!“.

In addition to them, singers Gojo Mayumi, Tada Aoi, MIC AIMI, Keisuke Minami attended the concerts as well as porn star Haneda Ai and Ayumi Seko, also models Otomo Sayuri and Taira Yukiko. Through blogs and Twitter many posted their photos from the concert.

Big Bang’s side expressed their joy by saying, “Big Bang’s album climbing to #1 on the Oricon chart, and selling out all of their concert tickets has resulted in a lot of attraction and news for them.” Big Bang’s tour in Japan will come to an end on May 19th after performing a total of 8 concerts.

After 1 year and 9 months, Korea 5-men group, BIGBANG released their album ‘BIGBANG 2’ on 11th and it has already attained 65000 sales. On 23rd, they have secured 1st place in Oricon weekly chart.

Ever since their major debut, this is the 1st time that they have garnered 1st place in Oricon weekly chart. In the category of the Korea and Asia artists category (including solo artists) ) of the Oricon chart, TVXQ’s ‘BEST SELECTION 2010’ (released in February 2010) was the 1st group who garnered this honour while JYJ’s mini album, ‘The…’ (released in September 2010) was the second group.

BIGBANG has now become the 3 rd group. And up until now, after their major debut in Japan with the single ‘My Heaven’ (released in June, 2009) and the 1st regular album, ‘BIGBANG’ (released in August, 2009) has the best record of staying in the 3rd place .

BIGBANG 2 includes the opening song ,'Let me hear your voice' from the drama , 'Long live the single girl' which starred Misuki Arisa and ‘IRIS’ theme song which starred Lee Byung Hyun (released last June). A total of 10 songs are included in this album.

Starting from 10th of May, they have been having a Japan tour, BIGBANG’s leader G-Dragon said, "I am really happy that our album has also secured 1st place in the Oricon chart when we are having our activities in Japan. In a unique survey asking netizens “if you only had 8 minutes remaining to live, what male idol would you spend your last moments with?” like the situation which is depicted in the movie “Source Code”‘, Big Bang was ranked as the most wanted male idols to be spent the day with.

Nate conducted this survey from May 12th to the 15th and an overwhelming 61% of netizens picked Big Bang as the #1 group they’d like to spend their last moments with.

Behind Big Bang, 2PM and JYJ tied each with 17% and BEAST with 6%.Meanwhile, “Source Code” which was released on May 4th, has attracted a big crowd and is continuing to rank high in the box-office .

G-Dragon & TOP rank 1st & 3rd in 'whom female idols desire a Spring outing with' poll



According to a survey, BIGBANG’s G-Dragon is the person whom the female idols want to have a spring outing with.

In April, SBS Inkigayo has done a poll targeted at the idols and the staff who have appeared in the programme. The poll is to held in order to know about which male idols that the female idols want to have a Spring outing with. G-Dragon of BIGBANG is selected most according to the result announced on 20th.

The 2nd place was shared by Yunho of DBSK and ZE:A ‘s Hwang Kwang Hee while the 3rd place is shared by BIGBANG’s TOP and CNBLUE’s Jung Yong Hwa. Beast’s Yoon Doo Joon and Lee Ki Kwang rank 4th and 5th respectively.

For G-Dragon, he used to say that in this good season (Spring) of going on an outing, he would give his girlfriend a pair of lovely high-heeled sandals as a present, and he himself would wear a casual T-shirt with a bow tie in order to match his girlfriend. Then both of them would be eyes catching since the sense of ‘fashionista’ is created. It is why he is selected to be the 1st.

Yunho of the second place is recently called as ‘a foolish sister’ because he possesses an image of caring brother. TOP’s humour couples with his manners contribute to his perfection, Jung Yonghwa’s compassion towards his girl has been shown in a virtual marriage programme. Many female celebrities have regarded Doo Joon as their ideal men. Kikwang’s ‘American dance’ shows us he is a gorgeous dancer, he can catch the attention of the opposite sex and therefore is also ranked high in the poll.

Moreoever, for the rank of the female idols whom the male idols choose to spend their Spring outing with, Orange Caramel’s Nana ranks 1st, IU ranks 2nd , 4Minute’s Hyuna ranks 3rd , Girls Day’s Mina ranks 4th and F(x)’s Sulli ranks 5th.

BIGBANG RETURNS TO KOREA!!



Big Bang held the last leg of their “Love & Hope” Japan concert tour at Nagoya on the 19th, ending the spectacular event with unprecedented scenes and stages.

Since the 10th of this month, Big Bang has held 8 concerts across Osaka, Chiba, and Nagoya, with attendance from about 100,000 Japanese fans.

In this concert tour, Big Bang attracted their audience with their unique and unrestrained stages. Other than the songs they released in Japan, they also performed their new Korean releases “Tonight” and “Love Song”, and the members’ solo stages.

It is worth mentioning that the members of Japan’s top girl group AKB48 also attended their concert. Big Bang’s concerts were attended by not only local celebrities, but also TV producers, etc. This became a popular topic of discussion, especially when these attendees shared about their experiences in the Big Bang concerts through their blogs.
