[Secret] SECRET was depressed over their “Shy Boy” concept

Fans used to SECRET’s powerful image with “Magic” and “Madonna” might have been a bit surprised over their retro turnaround, as the girls adopted a more romantic image with one-pieces and cute choreography. The most surprised, however, was none than the girls themselves.

They stated, “We expected our comeback to be either something stronger than our previous tracks, or a ballad concept. When we first received the concept for ‘Shy Boy,’ not only were we shocked over the cuteness of it all, but became fully depressed for about a week because we were so worried over it.”

Leader Hyosung continued, “Whether we liked the song or not didn’t matter at that point, because we failed to understand the character inside of the song.”

Zinger added, “For a week, we were all so depressed over the concept. We were able to give a powerful performance for ‘Madonna,’ but ‘Shy Boy’ required us to sing it in a fun way. All of us have a hard time with acting cute, and we went through a series of discussions with the composer in coming up with ways to pronounce certain things. One by one, we found something unique and made it our own.”

Fortunately, the song exceeded their expectations and has maintained its position in the top three on major music charts five days into its release.

The popularity of SBS’s “Secret Garden” also added to their popularity. With a viewer rating recording over 30%, fans of the drama who typed in the word ‘SECRET’ also found the keywords ‘Shy Boy’ beside it. TS Entertainment commented, “Thanks to the drama, SECRET has risen in search rankings. SECRET themselves are big fans of the drama, and we’re very thankful that people have been giving us their interest.”


Despite the success of their comeback, member Zinger is still being hit hard with their unexpected concept. She’s always dreamed of performing hip hop, but kept it to herself for the sake of the group. However, because the new concept is completely opposite to everything she’s worked for, she was left in a state of depression. No matter how much she replayed it or rapped it in different ways, concerns over how she would fit the concept grew heavy.

Thanks to her members, she was able to overcome the obstacles. “While going through such a difficult time, I realized that there were so many precious people next to me. I can’t just be greedy. Showing off SECRET’s charms comes before my own needs.”

Hyosung, Sunhwa, and Ji Eun added, “Zinger is such an important presence to us, it was upsetting and worrying seeing her go through such a hard time. It was something she had to get through on her own, so there was nothing we could do, which we feel very sorry for. We’re thankful she was able to overcome her own battle. Through this comeback, we’ve gotten a lot closer as a group.”

The girls were also swept up in a minor controversy over their ‘retro concept’, as netizens began comparing it to the Wonder Girls and SNSD’s “Hoot.”

They concluded, “We knew that people would ask whether we were copying the retro concept, and lo and behold, they really did ask that (laughter). But our choreography and our voices are different. Those who watch us will know, because we have our own unique style on stage. We sometimes exaggerate our movements, act while singing, and even whisper to each other. Please consider it as a cuteness of SECRET.”
